Heading home to Delaware for the Christmas break, a young woman (Emily Blunt) accepts a ride from a nerdy fellow student (Ashton Holmes), who's been nursing a crush on her all semester. Their five-hour drive begins on a sour note and only gets more acrimonious, particularly when he swerves off the interstate to take a "scenic detour" through a snow-covered forest road. The only respite from their constant bickering occurs when a mysterious car bears down on them, forcing them off the road into a ditch.
Unable to move, miles from help, and out of cell phone range, they hunker down for the night as the temperature plummets well below freezing. But as they soon realize, they are not alone. The ghosts of an evil state trooper (Martin Donovan) and his victims haunt the couple, who find themselves caught in a supernatural loop, reliving the nightmarish events that occurred on this strip of road, over and over again.
